My personal and professional life…
Well, as a teacher most of my personal time is taken up with my students. However, lately I have made made more of an effort to leave work at work. I have a very understanding husband and am a mother of three amazing boys (9, 6, and 5). They keep me very busy, and are my most important priority. They have truly balanced my life. They were my main reason for making the change to move here. I found that I was always working and life was moving at such a fast pace. Moving to Qatar helped slow things down a bit. I have to admit, it was a culture shock for my Arab-American kids to move to an all Arab country, but their transition has been easier because they are attending the American International School of Doha. They have friends from all over the world, and can now relate and talk about different places and people. Hopefully in the next two years we will move
back to the U.S., because there is truly no place like home!
I am a graduate of The University of Michigan in 2005, (shhhh don’t tell.) My students joke that I should get my PHD from Ohio State for a triple threat degree. My undergraduate program was great. There, I learned the hands on techniques that I know make me a successful teacher.Upon choosing my major and minor in college, I thought about the girls that lose interest in math and science in middle school. I really wanted to reach those students and show them how these areas are highly beneficial in school and life. So, I received my major in Mathematics, and a minor Science. I am currently concentrating on a Special Education degree as well. I worked as a teacher in the US for 5 years as a middle school math teacher. Three years ago, I was offered a contract to teach internationally in Qatar (a country next to Dubai.)
Qatar is a huge investor in Educational Institutions and has partnered with universities like Georgetown, Texas A & M, and Cornell amongst many others. It is actually refreshing to see how much they value American educational institutions, and respect the American education. Moving here has been a very rewarding and insightful experience. As a second generation American, I was a bit nervous at first but after arriving here and experiencing their hospitality, I was happy with my decision.
